Industrial Lock Domain Revealed: The Surprising Difference Between Battery-Free Locks and Electronic Locks

Updated: Nov 7

Battery-free locks vs. electronic locks

(一)Differences in the location of the operating power supply

Active lock is set up in the lock body working power supply, the need for working power has been on standby, which leads to active locks working power supply power consumption is extremely fast, and maintenance is extremely troublesome. The passive lock will work on the power transposed to the electronic key, when the ‘active electronic key’ and ‘passive electronic lock’ contact at the same time, ‘active electronic key’ on the power supply and unlocking Electronic code into the built-in microcomputer ‘passive electronic lock’ at the same time, the two passwords meet, the lock will be able to open. This is a good solution to the active lock consumes a large number of batteries, the need for frequent maintenance, complex structure, low degree of generalisation and standardisation, the failure rate of a series of inherent problems.

(二)Different management systems and characteristics

Battery-free lock management system is more intelligent and rigorous. Passive locks are characterised by contact communication, built-in high security chips, idle and snap-in interfaces. In contrast, the management system of active locks is relatively complex and requires consideration of power supply and maintenance issues. Active locks are usually larger in size, with higher installation and maintenance costs. Passive locks are simple and easy to install, without the need to provide power and network, for outdoor cabinets and other scenarios is more convenient and reasonable. Passive locks are equipped with advanced technology for upgrading the function of old cabinets and intelligent management of new cabinets. The unlocking record can be checked at any time, and it can keep abreast of the cabinet repair and maintenance situation.

For example, in some unattended server rooms, the passive intelligent lock identification function realises the transition from ‘key unlocking’ to ‘human unlocking’ direction, and only personnel with authority can complete the unlocking action. Active locks in this scenario may not be able to meet the demand due to power issues and maintenance difficulties. In addition, the electronic key of passive locks cannot be copied, ensuring the security of the lock. While the key of active locks may have the risk of being copied, the security is relatively low.

In summary, industrial passive locks and active locks in the work of the power supply location, management system and features, there are obvious differences. Passive locks provide a smarter, safer and more convenient locking solution with broad application prospects while solving the inherent problems of active locks.
